There are multiple A&S activities held during the day, including an A&S competition, an A&S display, supplemental contests, and the Art of Combat Challenge.
A&S ENTRY PREREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED to participate in the day’s A&S activities in order to allocate space appropriately. No A&S entry registration or changes will be allowed at the event. The deadline for preregistration is Sunday, October 30, 2022 at 11:59 PM.
Each entrant is limited to 2 entries: one entry in the A&S Competition and one entry in the A&S Display, with the option of additionally entering these into the supplemental contests, as desired. An entry may consist of a single item, or a set of related items.

Arts & Sciences Competition
Experience Levels
Each entrant declares the competition level group they feel best fits their experience level. Advice is available from competition staff but entrant must make the decision.
- Novices have entered up to 2 previous small competitions or displays & feel inexperienced in A&S competitions This group focuses on entering the competition and presenting their work. This group does NOT JUDGE others. *
- Artisans have entered more than 2 A&S competitions or displays and have experience in getting feedback & refining their entry so it shows to best advantage. This group WILL JUDGE entries in the Novice level within the category of their entry and will also be judged by Experienced-level competitors. *
- Experienced competitors have entered several local or Kingdom-wide competitions or displays. This group also includes any Laurel whose entry is anything-BUT-what-they-were-laureled-for. This group WILL JUDGE entries in the Novice or Artisan level within the category of their entry and will also be judged by assigned judges.**
*If there is not an adequate number of judges in a given level and category, independent judges will be assigned by the competition staff.
**Laurels are permitted to enter the competition, only if it is an art other than what they were laureled for.
Entry Categories
In order to better match contestants with judges, entries are sorted into one of several broad categories. It is up to the entrant to choose which category best fits their entry.
The following categories will be evaluated using the same scoring format (see “Score Sheet” section below). Research papers and performance entries are not currently accepted in this competition, however, a supplemental contest for “non-tangible research” is in the works for 2023.
- Paper & Ink – This could be fine art, C&I, bookbinding, etc.
- Metal, Glass, Clay, & Wood – This could be armor, jewelry, stained glass, cabinetry, etc.
- Fiber, Fabric, & Leather– This could be spinning, weaving, sewing, leatherwork, etc.
- Food & Consumables – This could be food, beer, toothpaste, cosmetics, etc.
Judging Process
All competitors must be present for face-to-face judging and should be prepared to discuss their work and choices. All entries should include documentation (see “Documentation” section below).
- Novices will NOT be judging, as their focus is on their entry, work, documentation, and the experience of having their work judged.
- Artisans and Experienced Competitors WILL JUDGE entries in a less experienced level (Novice or Artisan), within the category of their entry.
- Experienced Competitors will be judged by assigned judges (with experience in a given category) that are NOT entering the competition.
- If there is not an adequate number of judges in a given level and category, independent judges will be assigned by the contest staff.
- All judges are expected to be kind and constructive with their critique, there will be mentors to help with commentary as needed. All judging sheets will be reviewed before submission for clarity and content.
Documentation
All levels of competition are encouraged to provide some form of written documentation. The St. Eligius 12 Questions sheet is acceptable at all levels of the competition; however the following formats are recommended based on the experience level chosen.
- Novices are encouraged to use the St. Eligius 12 Questions sheet (or other formats, as desired).
- Artisans are encouraged to use the St. Eligius 12 Questions sheet or other documentation formats, as desired.
- Experienced competitors are encouraged to use written or alternative documentation formats.
Helpful hint: Where possible, images of extant examples or related items should be included to help those scoring your work. Source location information should be provided so that others can look up your sources and find the same images and text that you found. Sources should be generally regarded as reputable and directly applicable to the entry.

Competition Schedule
Arts & Sciences Display
Not everybody wishes to be scored, so entrants are warmly encouraged to DISPLAY their works for the delight and amazement of the populace. Please consider showing your works and let us see what you’re up to.
Entries in the A&S Display must be pre-registered and may be optionally entered into the Supplemental Contests. Setup and Breakdown for the A&S Display will follow the Competition Schedule posted above.
Supplemental Contests
To enter the Supplemental Contests, your entry must be preregistered in either the A&S Competition or the A&S Display.
Baron Adhemar Challenge
This is a challenge in honor of the late Baron Adhemar de Villarquemada. Entrants are invited to display something that would have amused or delighted him. His larger-than-life persona was that of a 14th C French Baron and he loved food, history, art, and music. He had a strong singing voice and a laugh that could shake dust from the ceiling. This challenge will be judged by a team familiar with his personality and liveliness. A special prize will be presented for this challenge winner.
Master Tristan Challenge
This challenge is in honor of Master Tristan de Worrell. One of Master Tristan’s many interests was “the food arts”. He delighted in researching and making food using various period methods of preparation and preservation. Tristan often lent his knowledge, support, and enthusiasm to others who were travelling the same path. In that vein, we announce a food challenge to honor him.
Entries for this challenge should fall into one or more of the following preserved food categories: Cheese, Pickling, Smoking, Bacon, Bread, Salt, Cured (dry), or Brined (salt or vinegar).
Documentation, preparation, presentation, and taste will all be considered in choosing the winner for this challenge. The winner will be decided by a small team of Master Tristan’s closest friends and fellow “Foodies”. A special prize will be presented for winner of this challenge.

Master Alexander Challenge
In the spirit of Master Alexander the Younger, a man who picked up new arts regularly, please enter an example of your work in an art that is new to you within the last year. New techniques within the art that you already practice do not count (i.e. glassblowing to enameling of blown glass beakers is an expansion of a skill, not a new-to-you art form.) The intent is to give a supportive venue for trying new arts without the rigors of open competition. A special prize will be presented for this challenge winner.
Populace’s Choice
All entries will be set up with a container for populace choice beans. Each person in attendance will receive 3 beans upon completion of gate/check-in to distribute to their favorite entries, as desired. The entry with the most beans at the close of the A&S activities will receive a prize.
Coronets’ Choice
The Baronial Coronets will provide a prize to the entry or entries that most please Their Excellencies.
Dragonship Haven A&S Champion
The Barony of Dragonship Haven’s Arts & Sciences Champion will be selected at this event. Entries for Baronial A&S Champion must be pre-registered in either the A&S Competition or A&S Display (in order to reserve space for your entry), and may be optionally entered into the Supplemental Contests. Entrants for Baronial A&S Champion must reside within Dragonship Haven.
Don Christoffel’s Art of Combat Challenge
Once again, Don Christoffel has issued his Art of Combat Challenge to take place at this event. Please contact Don Christoffel (123956@members.eastkingdom.org) with your intent to respond to his challenge. Choose your favorite period Master’s combat style. Bring documentation and/or a description of the Master and play you choose to use. Describe the action and perform it for your team of judges. It is recommended that you have descriptive props such as handouts or other ways to help explain your actions. The judging criteria will be based on the documentation provided, interpretation of the action, and how well your action represents what is described. The trio of judges generally consists of one experienced member of each of the following specialties: rapier, rattan, and arts & sciences. A special prize will be presented for this challenge winner by Don Christoffel.
Additional Information
- No kitchen facilities are provided. All food, beverage, and cosmetic entries must have a full ingredients list to avoid foreseeable allergies.
- Works-in-progress are very welcome.
- Works that are difficult to transport may be entered via photos & write-ups. Videos of works are permitted. Entrants must still be present to discuss their work and to score others’ works.
- Use of smartphones or computers to show images or references is permitted but not required. No equipment will be supplied, but you may share or borrow. NO internet hotspot access is available.
- This site is dry, however alcohol-containing entries are welcome. Please use period-appearing containers and take your empties with you. Alcoholic entries may only be consumed during the process of judging.
